The same tests were also conducted research paper on soil mechanics freezing and thawing cycles. Additionally, scanning electron microscope SEM tests to determine the microstructures of the soil samples and energy dispersive X-ray-EDX tests to determine the chemical compositions of the samples were performed. Finally, triaxial compression tests were conducted before and after the freezing and thawing cycles to determine the strength parameters of the soil samples. The experimental results show that the physical and mechanical properties of the soil changed significantly after the freezing and thawing cycles.
Effect of Embedment Depth on Response of Machine Foundation on Saturated Sand. Abstract In this paper, a dynamic analysis of stripmachine foundation is carried out.
The foundation of multiple thicknesses is placed at different depths above a saturated sand with different states i. The dynamic analysis is performed numerically by using finite element software, PLAXIS 2D. The soil is assumed as elastic perfectly plastic material obeys Mohr—Coulomb yield criterion.
A parametric study is carried out to evaluate the dependency of machine foundation on various parameters including the amplitude of the dynamic load, the frequency of the dynamic load and the embedment of foundation. It was concluded that increasing the embedment ratio causes a reduction in the dynamic response up to a certain embedment depth; when the depth of embedment increases higher than 1m, the effect become less pronounced and as strength of the soil increases, the effect of embedment depth in reducing dynamic response will decrease also.
Finally, when the embedment of foundation increases from 1. Keywords Machine foundation ・ Harmonic load ・ Finite elements ・ Elastic perfectly plastic ・ Foundation embedment ・ Saturated soil. Determination of failure criteria for non-standard materials for road pavements. Traditionally pavements have been constructed with granular materials complying with standard limits on index tests with regard to grading, plasticity of fines and strength of the coarse fraction.
Materials which satisfy the limits, set Materials which satisfy the limits, set largely through experience, are known as standard materials. Many naturally occurring gravels, used for pavement construction, are non-standard owing to excessive fines and plasticity. Some such non-standard gravels, used in an attempt to minimise construction costs, have performed satisfactorily while some have failed prematurely.
The mix of material properties related to pavement performance under irregular traffic loads and environmental changes, which cause some non-standard materials to perform well and others to perform poorly, are not well understood. Hence pavement construction with non-standard gravels is risky.
The factors involved had to be investigated through various laboratory tests on non-standard granular materials followed by numerical modelling. Standard granular material and manufactured non-standard granular materials from mixtures of crushed quartzite rock and commercial kaolin were tested.
Further increases in plasticity reduced the maximum dry densities and CBR below the values observed for non-plastic material. Drained repeated load triaxial tests were performed on materials at maximum dry density and optimum moisture content to investigate their resilient behaviour. In addition rebound CBR tests were performed to investigate the possibility of obtaining resilient properties with a greater convenience. Lastly, triaxial repeated load tests and static triaxial tests were performed on saturated samples while monitoring pore pressure changes.
An isotropic elastic model, based on the principles of conservation of energy in a closed loop during unloading and reloading, was extended to include the effects of dilatancy, relevant for non-standard materials, research paper on soil mechanics.
Parameters in the model were established by analysing each test result using numerical fitting. The constitutive model can then be applied to the stress path in any field situation and to the rebound CBR test. The model, in conjunction with numerical integration, was very suitable in xiv predicting both resilient modulus and the trends shown in the rebound CBR test. Resilient modulus was found to decreases with the increase in plasticity. A pseudo-plastic model was used to analyse permanent strains developed from both the repeated load triaxial test and rebound CBR test.
The results indicate that permanent strains increase with material plasticity. The research findings suggest that resilient modulus and permanent strain trends in non-standard materials at optimum moisture content and in the saturated state are adversely affected by the plasticity. A rational approach to pavement design is to relate pavement design directly with material properties.
Performance properties of resilient modulus and permanent strains presented in parameters for non-standard materials are important for pavement design. Empirical design method where only standard materials are used in pavements can be relaxed to allow use of non-standard materials albeit for shorter pavement life or under reduced traffic.
